This law was designed specifically to protect health information transmitted in an electronic form by a health plan, health care clearinghouse, hospital, pharmacist or doctor in connection with a transaction covered by HIPAA (e.g., electronic submission of prescription information for online adjudication, electronic submission of claims for reimbursement).
